Frequently Asked Questions:
We’ve gathered some of the most commonly asked questions to help you learn about practicing at UPY. If your question isn’t answered below, please e-mail [email protected]. Thank you!
How does the Groupon work?
Groupons are for NEW Clients Only and are ONE per customer. We also offer AWESOME deals in the studio for New Clients! Ask about our New Member Deals when you come in for your first class.
If you are brand new to the studio, and you have a Groupon, you will not be able to sign up for your first class online. Bring the groupon voucher (on your phone or printed) with you 15-20 minutes before your first class and we will set it up for you.
Do I have to pre-register for classes to save my spot?
We highly recommend that you pre-register if you know you are definitely coming to a class—it facilitates a faster check in! If you do not pre-register, please arrive 15-20 minutes before class so we have time to check you in. Drop ins are always welcome.
What can I expect when I arrive?
When you arrive, our goal is to welcome you and make you feel comfortable. During your yoga practice, our goal is to help you to feel challenged and focused. When you leave, our goal is for your body to feel strong and flexible and your mind to feel relaxed and calm.
What if I’m a few minutes late?
Please try to arrive 15-20 minutes before class to get settled. We lock the doors 5 minutes after class starts to ensure all our students receive our full attention, and have a great practice. If you are less than 5 minutes late, it is ok to quietly come in and join the class, but please remember to check in with the front desk immediately following class. Arriving late is something that ought to occur infrequently.
How often do you recommend I take class?
The more you practice, the more you benefit, both physically and mentally. Coming to three classes per week is a reasonable commitment and one that will definitely allow you to see and feel changes as your body gets stronger and more flexible, and your mind starts to learn how to relax. If you have time for a daily practice, that’s ideal! That said, even once a week or once a month will have positive benefits, albeit smaller and slower. Life is busy. Just do your best and come when you can.
What should I wear and/or bring?
We recommend you wear comfortable, breathable clothes. Bring a yoga mat, a towel, and water. You can also rent a mat ($2) and towel ($2), and bottled water and SmartWater® can be purchased ($1/$2) as well.
What do you recommend I eat or drink before/after class?
We recommend that you drink water throughout the day before, during and after class to stay hydrated. In addition to regular water, we recommend SmartWater®, coconut water, and water containing fruit or electrolytes. We do suggest that you only eat lightly about 1-2 hours before class, and preferably practice on an empty stomach. After class, drink a lot of water and eat a healthy meal.
Can I bring my daughter/son to class with me?
For beginners (unheated) and warm classes, our age minimum is 13 years of age. For hot classes, our minimum age is 16 years of age. Ages 13 – 15 must have a parent / guardian also participating with them in each class. All minors (under 18) must have a waiver signed by their parent/guardian, in person at the studio prior to participating in their first class.
Are the kids in the same class as adults?
No. Kids (ages 3-10) have their own yoga class with their own Kids Yoga teacher. The kids’ class is held in the small studio while adults practice in the big studio. The classes run concurrently so you can practice at the same time as your kids! Check out our schedule for the Kids Yoga class times.
Can I practice if I’m pregnant?
Talk to your doctor first—especially if you are new to Yoga! We will offer some pre-natal yoga throughout the year. If you don’t see it on the current schedule, e-mail us ([email protected]) and let us know you are interested.
Are there mirrors, carpets, or snobby people?
No, no and no. 😉 We don’t have mirrors because we want to encourage a non-competitive environment. UPY floors are foam tiles that are 100% allergen free and contain no latex or other hazardous chemicals. (We love these floors—they’re so easy to clean!) We work hard to make sure the energy of the studio is friendly and welcoming for the entire community, everyone belongs.
Where are you located?
Our studio is conveniently located on Route 1 in Norwood, heading towards Walpole. You’ll find us between Bon Caldo Restaurant and the Home Depot Plaza. The studio is on the second floor above the Oreck store.
Address: 1401 Providence Hwy, Suite 3, Norwood, MA 02062.
Is there parking?
Yes – we have lots of free parking.
How do I find the studio on the second floor?
Enter the building through the front door and walk down the hallway to the stairs at the back of the building. Go up the stairs; we are on the right side of the second floor. There is also an elevator if needed.
